Alison Henry Receives Youth Advocate Award

United Way's Youth as Resources (YAR) board recently selected Arc Program Manager, Alison Henry, as the recipient of the 2015 Gabriella Klein Award for Outstanding Youth Advocate in Racine County. The award

recognizes a Racine County resident who has demonstrated a strong commitment to youth empowerment and development in our community.

Peggy Foreman, Arc's director, nominated her for the award, saying "Alison is passionate about helping students and adults with disabilities identify their interests, look for opportunities to develop their skills and build their self-confidence. Alison has worked with more than 300 students ages 14-21 who have special needs in our self-advocacy programs and as a volunteer coach for Special Olympics."

In response to receiving the award, Alison said, "Educating youth about self-advocacy and self-determination early on will help them go out into the real world and show others that they matter, and that what they want matters. Sometimes all they need is a guiding hand, a good listener and someone to help them start their path. And I am lucky and thankful to be one of those people."

Congratulations Alison!!

People First - Racine County off to a Great Start!

Racine County's own People First chapter is off to a great start with President Paul Schowalter at the helm.  He and his team have held several meetings to identify issues of concern for people with disabilities in Racine County.  Wisconsin Chapter President, Cindy Bentley, is mentoring the group.

One initiative is to ask city officials for help in correcting dangerous crosswalks where people with disabilities do not have ample time to cross safely. The officers, along with members recruited thus far, meet monthly to discuss barriers that affect their ability to live, work and participate fully in the community.

People First is a national organization that was formed to encourage people with disabilities to have an organization of their own.  The Arc of Racine County received a SPARKS grant last fall from the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities (WBPDD) to start the chapter. Alison Henry and Ross Gietzel are co-advisors for the group.

Meetings are held once a month at various locations.  Membership is free. Please visit the Arc website at for more information.
